Fashion goods evolve through many steps before they become finished garments or accessories. Many individuals and companies move products through the fashion channel of distribution from beginning to end from raw materials to finished goods. This lesson taught channels of distribution and the different types of channels utilized in the fashion industry. Further, you learned about the different types of goods and textiles, as well as the different trade associations and industry publications within the fashion industry. That's a lot of material for one lesson! So, to help you understand these dynamics a bit better, you will work with your team to complete one of six different projects related to this lesson as an extension to the lesson.
The end product of your project extension choice will be some type of Poster or Tri-Fold visual. The projects will be due on Wednesday, March 4 and on March 5, you will participate in a gallery walk to learn from the content of the other project extensions. Only 2 extensions per area will be granted to ensure that all 6 areas are covered. Projects will be graded utilizing the rubric posted at the bottom of this Wikipage.
Project Extension Choices
1. Textile Production: Research the history and locations of U.S. textile production, apparel production, and retailing. How has the industry changed? Where are today’s areas of concentration in the industry? Develop a poster that illustrates the history, locations, and changes in the industry, as well as illustrate the industry as it is today (including areas of concentration, companies, etc)
2. Forecasting: Research at least two forecasting services (one domestic and one foreign-a list of companies will be provided for you to aid you in your research). Develop a poster that defines what a forecasting service is and includes the following information on those forecasting services: what services are offered, what products and markets are covered, how many reports are prepared each year, who are the clients, how far ahead the retail season the predictions are done, and what fees must be paid for the services.
3. Household Textiles: Conduct research on this industry (a list of companies will be provided for you to help you with your research). Create a poster that illustrates aspects of the industry including recent consolidation, modernization, and refocusing of domestics and home furnishings vertical mills and manufacturers. Also include information on which retailers sell the most domestics and linens by dollar amount or by a percentage of their sales.
4. Trade Associations/Publications: Conduct research on at least one trade association and two trade publications. Create a poster that illustrates the history of the association/publication, who started it, why and when it was started, how the association/publication has changed over the years, what events they participate in or sponsor, etc. Be sure to include information that was presented in the lesson.
5. Retailing Textiles: Visit a local furniture store, department store, and a “bed and bath” shop. Create a poster that compares the three types of retailers according to as many aspects as possible about how they market each category of their household textile products. Keep in mind that your poster should answer questions of how these retailers market domestics, furniture items, and other household textiles.
6. Home Sewing: Complete a simple home sewing project. Then, create a poster that describes the steps you took to complete the project, illustrates your individuality, conveys if you saved money, had a better quality of construction that ‘store bought,’ and illustrates that advantages and disadvantages you discovered in home sewing.
